BMW M30 60-2 crank trigger and cam home

Postby sierra4x4tbo » Wed Oct 19, 2016 5:20 am

Hi!

Im in the middle of installing E11v2 ECU to replace the E6X on my BMW M30 turbo engine.
The manual says that the home signal has to come just before TDC. Not any angle value is given.
Does the cam home trigger angle matter?
I think the home triggering should happen after the crank trigger signal but before TDC. Am i right?

Also thinking about using BMW original VR-trigger sensor on crank and some aftermarket HALL-sensor on cam home. Do you see any issues with this? I have read that some have problems with 60-2 trigger wheel and VR-sensors and some do not..

Thanks in advance!

MIssing tooth trigger are a different animal. The Home simply tells the system which cycle the next missing tooth event is on. From there you will adjust your setup to suit the missing tooth angle from TDC.

For non-missing-tooth triggers, with older systems like this, you would set the Home to occur before the trigger event for cylinder 1, but after the last cylinder in the firing order.

So i'll need to setup the home trigger so that the home signal comes before the missing tooths (cyl 1 TDC)?

So confused with these..

No, it can occur anywhere.

To confuse you more..... It tells the system to look for the next missing tooth to start syncronising. Then, you need to tell the system how many crank degrees is that missing tooth event from TDC cylinder 1. If you have a 4-stroke piston engine, this can be from 0-720 degrees away. Your ECU model is very old, so by design it needs to pick a single tooth on the crank before cylinder 1 TDC comes up. This tooth cant be closer than the most amount of timing you want to run. eg. you cant run 35degress of timing if the chosen tooth occurs at 34BTDC. So a value around 50 to 70 is where you start. Then that chosen tooth is how many tooth after the missing tooth event after the Home event. Complicated, but necessary at the time. Newer models like the Elites do this automatically in the background, you simply tell the system how many degrees the missing tooth is from TDC cylinder 1.

In other words. Set your Trigger angle at 50. Keep moving the tooth offset (for a 60-2 is can be a number from 0 to 119) until the timing lines up within a few degrees. Start the engine. Fine adjust the Trigger angle to perfectly line up the timing. Should take you 2 minutes at the most!

If it is like an M42, the cam home is before the missing teeth on the crank and the missing teeth are around 120 degrees BTDC.

I have been trying to get an E11 working on an M42 with 60-2 + cam home and it has given me no end of grief with random ignition events but I have not got a storage oscilloscope to help me work out where the issue is, the E11 was working perfectly on a HR31 Skyline prior to going on this car so I do not have any reason to suspect the ECU.

Ok! Thank you! I'll try to manage. :D

Also what i've read E11v2 is capable of running three wire BMW BAC valve? Or should i go with GM-stepper valve?
E6X was shit controlling BMW valve..
