cam phasing turning off after car restart

Postby str8dum1 » Thu May 13, 2010 5:52 am

Hey guys,

Got a problem that has been seen by other 2003 G35 owners as well. I am running the latest firmware (1.06)

If you turn the car off, restart is and do a pull, the cam phasing does not activate. After 2 or 3 WOT pulls, then the cam phasing works.

It was very obvious on the dyno by watching the boost curves.I might be able to get my tuner to send me the dynos showing the difference. The 1st pull after the restart would have the turbos starting to spool at 6000 rpms, 2 pulls later and then the turbos start to spool at their normal 5000 rpms.

Pretty sure Hal at Injected has seen the exact same thing on another customers G35 with twin GT3082 turbos. Has anyone else run into this problem? Fixes? This is obviously very problematic for a drag car that needs to be shut off in the staging lanes.

Thanks!

Another attempt at an answer from Haltech.. 2003.5 G35c

Here's the dyno graph showing the difference. 1st dyno (pink line) after the car was restarted and then the next pull (green line). Cams phasing off then cam phasing on....

there doesnt seem to be a solution. Haltech tech support does not even acknowledge this as an issue when its affecting multiple vehicles.
I might try using a later model non-rev ECU next time i go to my tuner cuz I know 2004-2005 models dont seem to have this issue (at least RCDash doesnt)

Is it noticed only on high powered Z's and 2003 models?

I know its definitely on 2003's and at least 2 different G35s, one being tuned exclusively by Hal at Injected. Its hard to gather more examples as the smaller the turbo, the less you'd probably notice the lag.

But its 100% obvious on the dyno.

So, even with my new tune, I am still seeing cam phasing issues.

Very obvious when you look at the powerband and it really makes tuning the map a real whore, since its completely different cells getting used on the map!

Here's a pull where the cam phasing isnt turning on (MAP vs HP)

compared to when it is on (HP vs Trq) . Thats like a 750 rpm shift in the powerband!!!

Haltech must have heard this from other tuners by now.....
