24 Tooth Trigger setup (4AGE 20v)

Postby KYLE86 » Wed Jun 21, 2017 1:03 pm

Hello, I need some help with my silly little car. It's a AE86, 4AG Blacktop 20v, 1ZZ coils setup to fire sequential, factory 24 tooth cam angle sensor, sprint 500 ecu.

Been struggling to get my engine up and running with the sprint 500. Anyways, I have uploaded my base map onto the ECU but have not been able to get the ignition timing synced properly. I can see the timing light flash at 10' advance with ignition locked at 10 degrees with this setup.

Trigger Angle - 55'
Tooth Offset - 12'
Trigger Edge - Falling
Home Edge - Falling
Trigger Sensor Type - Reluctor
Home Sensor Type - Reluctor

Trigger and Home Filters Level 1

Trigger -ve GND selected on
Home -ve GND selected on

It acts like it is firing on the exhaust stroke but other tooth offsets and angles don't get the timing even close to where it should be on the timing light. My setups got to be wrong but I'm stumped for now. Any tips or tricks to getting the ignition timing synced correctly would be much appreciated! Thanks for the help!

likely your tooth off set is wrong, depends if you wired it up to G1 or G2 in the cam sensor.
24 tooth cam trigger means 12 teeth is one rotation of the engine. so try 0 tooth offset to see.

have you confirmed your seeing 10's base timing?
confirm this too.

i generally kept changing the tooth off set until i saw a timing mark close to 10's with the timing locked.
try to fire the engine, if it sounds ugly add or minus 12 teeth to check your not on exhaust stroke.
try and fire again. once running use the distributor housing to adjust it to 10 degrees, much easier when running vs when cranking.

As with all of the Toyota and Mazda 24 and 1 triggers, 65 angle and either 10 (using G1) or 22 (using G2) for the tooth offset lines them up. A little bit of angle difference if it is a movable CAS/distributor.

For those interested, the Elite uses the same numbers but represented differently. TDC Offset of 5 or 365 which are the true angles for the crank position of the 1st trigger tooth after the home tooth.
Using G1 sensor for Home. 10 teeth + 60 degrees = 360. Add 5 gives you 365.
Using G2 sensor for Home. 22 teeth + 60 degrees = 720 = 0. Add 5 gives you 5. :D

Thanks for the help, the car is alive! I tried the 0 tooth offset until I saw the timing light flash at 10*. Again, I really appreciate the help, you guys are awesome! Now to get the car to idle a little smoother, going to install my wideband and start messing with fueling!
