LS3 with no timing marks, TDC offset angle

Postby SONofSUN » Fri Jan 12, 2018 4:10 am

The late model LS3 with trigger 58X, 4X. has no timing marks to check timing sync. I just want to know what TDC offset angle others are using. In the maps from Haltech it is 441 deg and I have had an engine runs fine with that.
Finding TDC using piston stop tool may not be accurate enough.

How is using a piston stop tool and a degree wheel not accurate enough?

just so some info is out there for future problems

i have a 24x-1x
i used an aftermarket balancer with timing marks and set up a mightmouse pointer, used a dial indicator for top dead center.
ended up at 711.0 TDC

thanks
Because I always get different TDC marks on every attempt. small differences that makes me suspicious.

What brand of dial indicator you used.

i have a mitutoyo dial.

i know my motor isnt the same as yours but maybe theres a math formula you can use to convert my numbers to what you need?
also john bewley of lil john motorsports posted some info on facebook about factory cranks having 8* different key way locations, this may also affect your numbers to somebody elses if you are comparing

Many just simply lock it one side, mark the pulley, then lock it the other side, mark it again and use the middle of the two marks. You would have to be so close that you are really talking sub one degree here.

441 seems to be a common number for the Gen 4, but I have seen multiple numbers that people have come up with for the Gen 3 though. It does pay to do the check.
