Custom trigger wheel

Postby Vipe84 » Thu Sep 24, 2009 6:37 am

Hi,

We have bought a PS2000 for use with a BMW V8 engine (M62B44, single vanos) in a custom build.
The original trigger wheel was on the flywheel, but since we had to modify the flywheel to fit into an Audi gearbox, the teeth had to be removed.
There is no way to use the flywheel for trigger, so we need to make a custom trigger wheel on the front of the engine.

The maximum diameter of the trigger wheel can be 220mm.
What configuration should the disc have? 36-1, 62-2 etc. ?

The home trigger (camshaft) has a odd looking wheel. Do we need to modify this, or can the PS2000 understand whats going on?
The disc has two long teeth, and two short, located on the intake camshaft.
What trigger settings do we have to input if we are to use this disc?

There is also another issue;
One disc/trigger wheel on each intake camshaft. Why is this?

Any replies are greatly appreciated! :)

The cam is variable (intake cam only, on/off-style), and the home triggerwheel is mounted here.
Does it matter what position the one tooth on this wheel is located?

I noticed that one of the default settings in the software says 60-2 + 4Home.
My Home triggerwheel has four teeth, but as you can see of the picture, they are not evenly spaced and have different lenghts.
Can I use this setting, and install a 60-2 crank triggerwheel? (max 220mm diameter)

Topic Edited:

The simplest method is to remove 3 of the 4 teeth on the Exhaust cam and wire the Home signal wire to the sensor.
The remaining tooth needs to occur after the last cylinder to fire and more than 60 degree's BTDC cylinder 1.

There is a sensor on the inlet and exhaust cam so the facory ECU knows if the cam switching is working correctly.
The Inlet cam sensor is not used.

You can mount a 36-1 or 60-2 motronic crank trigger to the front of the crankshaft. There are many commercially available motronci triggers avilable. The minimum and maximum diameter of the wheel is dependant on the sensor you use.

The home signal (on the cam) needs to occur anywhere within 1 CRANK revolution before cylinder 1

Thanks for your reply Scott.

Some corretions on your reply though..

There is NO home sensor on the outlet (exhaust) cams. ONLY on the inlet, wich is variable.
There is one sensor/home triggerwheel on EACH inlet cam (V8, DOHC).

In this case please modify 1 x Inlet cam sensor to have a single tooth and use it as your home signal.

The engine project have been at a stand still due to chassis work, but now we are (finaly!) back to the engine again :D

We haven't modified the home-wheels yet because we need your adivice and opinions here.
The triggerwheel is machined to have 36 evenly spaced teeth.

The question(s):

Where to we put the missing teeth (if needed) on the triggerwheel?
Where should the 1 remaining tooth for the home event be?
