Hello,
04 350z built motor low comp greddy tt kit, rc 720's, jwt cams. On the dyno for tuning and i've gone through 3 coils so far. Using the 350z basemap and just tuning inj timing tables during driveability and poof....3 times already. The coils are burning the plastic near the connector and drops that cylinder firing after that.
what do i need to change in coil dwell? Thanks

Re: Burning up coils
Either the Dwell is too much, or one of the settings is incorrect.

Re: Burning up coils
just looked at the map,
4.4ms is whats entered in coil dwell. Lower it until it misfires???

Re: Burning up coils
alright did a couple pulls at 2.2ms and one coil was still getting hot.
so i put in 1ms and still random coils will get hot and misfire. at least now i can hear the misfire and know to let them cool off and they come back to able to fire off plug.
any ideas?

Re: Burning up coils
hate to bump an old thread and if nothing more for future help - have you checked to make sure your using high impedance injectors?

Hardly relevant to a coil problem...
Are you sure you're firing the coils on the correct edge ? They arent some odd coil that fires on a rising edge ?
Re: Burning up coils
The current Pro software choices don't even allow you to select trigger edge or dwell mode. Not sure if older versions did. If they did, either of those settings being wrong could lead to problems.

never said it was a coil problem, but when a high impedance injector is replaced with a low impedance injector the drop in impedance forces the circuit to draw more current through the injector controller. Excess current through the system means excess heat - which can destroy the injector, coil and controller…and if the OP is burning(literally) coils than it might be worth his time to check the resistance of his aftermarket injectors.
this isnt me be smart, this is me reading and reciting out of a tuning manual (Engine Management - Advanced Tuning, Greg Banish, 2007 - ISBN 978-1-932494-42-6)

I think what you are referring to is the coil windings of the injector. Not the ignition coil which the OP is referring to.
Two completely independent things. Injectors can have no impact on ignition coils burning out

Was this problem ever resolved?

Re: Burning up coils
Yes it was resolved. There was a ground not connected on the front or top of the chain cover,it was hidden under the harness
