Trigger system errors - 04 Cobra

Postby 04WhippleCobra » Sun Apr 29, 2018 9:12 am

I have installed the Elite 2500 plug-n-play kit in my 04 cobra have loaded the preset base map. Upon firing engine, it surges until it dies a few seconds later and I have recurring DTC's P1300 and P1302 setting every time I start the engine. In the diagnostics tab, trigger system error count rapidly increases as engine is running. I can run it for 10 seconds or so and have up to 90 errors. As far as I can tell all the trigger and home settings are set correctly in this base map. I know the cam and crank sensors and wiring harness are good as I can disconnect to patch harness and plug back in my factory ECU and the car will start and run perfectly. Plug the Haltech back in parallel with the factory ECU an it goes back to the same.

Any ideas on what is going wrong here?

I figured it ou and wanted to post back in case anybody else has the same issue. In the basemap for 99-04 mustang that comes in the ESP software it has the Home Trigger ground reference set to "disabled". It need to be changed to "enabled" as only one side of the Cam sensor is wired to the Elite in the plug-n-play harness.

Thanks for the update. I'm ordering my Elite 2500 plug n play for my 2003 Cobra. I've been looking at the basemap and I don't see any information on the stock returnless system. Do you use the returnless system on your setup by chance?

Bump. I am interested in the returnless fuel system function in the Elite ECU as well.

Do you let the factory ECU control the pumps ? I received this back from Haltech :

"The factory ECU retains control of the Fuel pump. This frees up some inputs and outputs on the Elite ECU. The Elite ECU monitors the fuel pressure and allows you to adjust flow rates based on this fuel pressure differential. "

Yes sir!

I used the factory ECU to control the FPDM. And I made a custom table to adjust the fueling to compensate for the "lag" of that system during load and throttle transitions. The Haltech is VERY awesome.

Brilliant !

Any chance you can share the concept behind the custom table you created in the Elite to handle for the lag ?

Sure, you can use a simple calculation to adjust the fuel flow for the difference in fuel pressure. Keep in mind that the FPDM is just a PWM using PID control to maintain a constant fuel pressure.

I just made a simple table to compensate the fuel flow for the difference in fuel pressure during transitions. you can see that in the image below.

There are many many more tables that need to be tuned in order to get your car running properly. I don't know your location but I am in Ohio, and our shop SlowMotion Motorsports provides dyno services and is a Haltech dealer. PM me if you are interested in setting something up.

That is great. Thanks for sharing.

I am located in BC . Thankfully we do have a Haltech tuner about 2 hours away but typically they (tuners) only do just whats needed to get it up and running smoothly. All of the additional tweaks like this to really get the most from the system would be up to us.

Yes, I agree. When a customer has a stand alone system I always recommend tuning knowledge and training. Rest assured, this is a great system with very few bugs like many of the other systems out there.

The hardest part is the limit of your imagination to create new tables and functions that simply don't exist on anything else.

I have a Q for you as you seem to have a lot of experience with these.

Do you still run the OE narrow bands with this system to keep the EECV happy ?

No, I do not run the stock o2's. I use the Haltech WB2 and employ full time closed loop fuel control. The stock computer really just runs the Dash and the FPDM.

FWIW - I'm also an SCT dealer. Disabling all of the codes on the EECV is almost impossible and requires a call to SCT. As you are probably aware, they have changed their policy with giving the authority to disable codes.

I like the idea of full time closed loop for adjustments at WOT. Thats interesting.

For anyone that runs across this thread you can also use HP Tuners for disabling the trouble codes as well . I use HPT for my LS stuff we have and purchased the upgrade to MPVI2 to write the EECV but it has been a real let down with the old Ford PCM. The scanner does not function and some tables like cold start enrichment are missing completely. It will allow you to turn off 02 etc and adjust pump voltage tables and injector data OK.
