Dave's Wideback hack / CAN Ground

Postby azfiveoh » Sun Jul 19, 2020 10:22 am

After watching Ep4 of Dave's wiring vlog (https://youtu.be/mDywezNuL0Q?t=75) I really like the wideband hack in which Dave splices the ground in the CAN plug from sensor ground to power ground thereby not having to use the breakout plug supplied with the wideband kit. Before modifying the harness I wanted to ask if there are any adverse effects to making the modification that could potentially cause problems with other CAN components. I have a CAN Hub and need to add an I/O expander.

I don't think you will have problems doing that mod.

If you were to add a bunch of devices on your CAN hub now you would draw more current than that signal ground pin could handle and you would end up needing to do the same mod anyway, right?

Hey Guys

Anytime we can get rid of some wires is a good thing.

It looks like the hack Dave does is on a single wide band controller.

Do you think there are any issues applying this wiring method with a dual wideband controller?

Cheers

I'm running a dual wideband as well and don't expect there to be any issue since the ground is coming directly from the batt/chassis.

a noob question
but doesn't the elite 2500 have a can plug on the top of the ecu? is this not suitable for the wideband?

For communication, yes, but not to power them. Wideband sensors can draw about 4 amps each so a dual channel box can be expected to draw 8 amps at some points. This is too much current for the ECU to supply through that CAN port.

Hi
If using a single channel Haltech WB controller (WB1), are the preterminated +ve and Negative wires in the CAN harness sufficient to power the sensor without using the additional power supply cable (HT-130043) ?

The heater element in the WB sensor is what draws the power. The CAN harness alone doesn't have the amperage capacity.

Thanx Jim, i eventually came to that conclusion myself and used the supplied power cable as detailed in the wiring diagram.

Just a quick question on this. Dave only splices the ground wire, but does the power wire need to be also spliced (with a relay/fuse)?

One of the comments said that after breaking out the ground only, the ECU had a buzzing sound. So the person commenting separated the power also and the buzzing stopped. I am using the adapter harness for the CAN and it gets it's power from the injector power.with no issues operating.
