I/O EXP-BOX can't drive the Solid State Relay

Postby Bounter » Tue Oct 26, 2021 4:03 am

Hi,
I have stumbled on a problem with the I/O Expansion Box, it seems neither DPO can turn off the 100A Solid State Relay (the one Haltech sells).
The relay is always on, the LED is on and it let's current through on the "power side".

The expansion box can however turn a "ordinary" relay on and off so I know the box is working but it seems like it let's enough current through to keep the SSR on even if the DPO is off.

The DPO's on the Elite 1500 box can turn the the SSR on and off with no problem.

Something I can do to fix the problem?
Maybe put a resistor or something in series between the SSR and the DPO?

I rather skip cutting up my harness and swap DPO's.

Kind regards
Jonas

Haha, I just tried the thing I wrote myself, I put one 1K resistor in series with the SSR and DPO and that did the trick, now the SSR turns on and off.
Now I just need to see if I can use a lower ohm resistor so the signal doesn't get too week?
Any suggestions?

You can see the link below..
It was written by Vishay and it explains which resistor to choose and the formula for calculation...

Thank you!
I will try and study that tomorrow.

I'm having same issue!!!
io box with dpo1 and haltech 100amp ssr
I even tried the resistor and it comes on when I start engine and dpo isn't even grounding the relay. so weird and idk how to fix it

I had one 1K resistor connected i parallel with the terminals on the SSR as the Haltech manual says and one 1K resistor i series with the SSR and DPO output and that worked for me but I still rewired my harness so I'm driving my SSR's from the Elite and not from the I/O box.

so you ended up using two 1k resistors?

I put the one that came with relay one end on dpo wire and the other end on 12v key wire.
once I start car the relay turns the load circuit on even thought the dpo isn't activated

Yes, I used two 1K resistors.
I think the one in series can be lower than 1K so you get better response, in the .pdf natanel posted there is a formula to calculate it but I have not used that because I rewired.

I really don't want to tear into my brand new engine harness. I would like to try the resistor thing

I wonder what the voltage has to be? what's the idle voltage for dpo from ecu?

Not sure but I know 1K works and I would maybe try with a 500 ohm and see if still works and if doesn't go up from there (or down).

so that led on the relay only lights up when it's "activated"? not just when key is on correct?

Yes, the red led should be off when only the key is on and light up when the dpo activates it.
